Basic Informations

Danube is the second-longest river of Europe (after the Volga). It rises in Germany, then crosses Austria (it waters Vienna), Slovakia (it waters Bratislava) and Hungary (it crosses Budapest). It then forms the serbo-croatian border, crosses Serbia and waters Belgrade. The river then forms the border between Romania (North) and Bulgaria (South). It then enters Romania, forms a part of the border with Ukraine before entering the Black Sea through a large swampy delta which is an important natural reserve.

Romania

The mighty Danube River, named by the Greek historian Herodotus "The King of the European Rivers," forms much of Romania's southern border. The Danube enters the territory of Romania at the famous Iron Gates (Portile de Fier) and ends its 670 mile journey through the country in the Black Sea. Before meeting the Black Sea, the Danube forms one of the most spectacular wetlands in the world, The Danube Delta - a unique 2,100-square-mile wildlife reserve - home to more than 300 species of birds and about 160 kinds of fish, both fresh and salt-water species.
Among the many sights near or along the Romanian section of the Danube River, worth visiting are: the ruins of the Roman bridge at Drobeta, Topolnita Cave, The Iron Gates Dam, the cities of Drobeta Turnu Severin, Orsova, Giurgiu, Oltenita, Braila, Galati and Tulcea. Bucharest, Romania's capital city, is only 40 miles north of the cities of Giurgiu (Romania) and Ruse (Bulgaria), both situated on the banks of the Danube.

From the mountains of the Black Forest the Danube makes its way through cliffs and surges down wild and romantic gorges to flow by mighty castles, palaces and monasteries, framed by the enchanting landscapes and Baroque splendor along its banks. The German poet Friedrich Hölderlin called the Danube a refreshing, melodious river, sometimes foaming with high spirits, at other times dreaming serenely. No other river in the entire world has inspired so many poets, musicians and painters to create masterpieces, along no other river can such a tremendous variety of scenery, historic cities, magnificent architecture and cultural treasures be found.

An artery of trade and communication running through the heart of Europe, the Danube links peoples and nations on its long journey from west to east. Art and music accompany the route of the great river until the melody reaches a gentle climax in a rustling sea of reeds: the Danube delta, one of the last paradises for man and nature.Romania_delta_2

The waters of the
Danube, which flow into the Black Sea, form the largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas - The Danube Delta (Delta Dunarii).

The Danube Delta is home to more than 300 migratory and permanent bird species; 160 kinds of fish that include caviar-bearing sturgeon and 800 plant families. This wetlands preserve covers more than 1,678,000 acres (2,622 sq. miles) comprising channels and canals widening into tree-fringed lakes, reed islands, numerous lakes and marshes, oak forests intertwined with lianas and creepers, desert dunes and traditional fishermen villages.

VSMU has been founded in 1949 for the university level art education. It has three faculties: Music and Dance, Theatre and Puppets and Film and Television. Though they have been thought some subjects like script writing or directing, the stand-alone Film and Television Faculty (with all necessary branches and departments to create a film) was established in 1990 as the only University level school for audiovisual media in Slovakia. The Academy offers a complete film and audiovisual education in seven ateliers (Script-writing, Directing, Documentary, Cinematography, Editing, Sound and Music, Animation) and two departments (Production and Management as well as a special Department of Humanities and Cinema Studies, which serves for the whole school and covers the university level of education with subjects like Aesthetics, Philosophy, Fine Arts History, The History of Cinematography, Sociology, Psychology, etc.). There is a stand-alone Language Studies Department for all three faculties. Students have the option of going on to a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. (ArtD.) after the initial Bachelor of Arts degree.

There is a rector as a head of the whole VSMU, deciding about covering investments and negotiating with the Ministry and Government. But every faculty has it’s own enterprise and business freedom and rights for decision. The same is valid concerning the curriculum, etc.

There is a dean as a head of Film and TV Faculty with three vice deans: for student affairs, for foreign affairs and for the student’s film production. There is an economical secretary and the Head of the Production Studio.

As visible by the structure, there is an aim to bring up young filmmakers, powerful in crafts as well as cultivated in the common cultural level and European tradition of education.

The school is rather artistic. It is based on the tradition of so called Czechoslovakian New Wave, but it is opened to new trends and techniques in the world cinematography, too.

It is still the state school, paid by the government, but it needs the grants a sponsors´ support nearly for everything. There is a question of paid studies in the air.

School Philosophy

We are living in the era of rapidly developing mass media culture. It isn’t a time of technical changes only, but a formation of new trends in the world cinematography as well. Maybe with some kind of mistrust we monitor the ingoing cultural uniformity which refuses to reflect the typical problems of new millennium and which disables authors to express themselves. The question is whether this globalisation change will cause an irreversible shift of perception of the world and film as its reflection.

But we are convinced that each modern film academy should react these present-day appeals. Therefore we would like to continue in the combination of new and traditional, accept current development but still retain inventiveness, craft and values obtained during more than semi centennial performance of The Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts in Bratislava.

Yes, the film confabulation is searching for a new face today. The door of our faculty is opened for everyone who still believes that it is possible to avoid shallowness and creatively fulfil the need of artistic reflection of the world and for those who has all the personal sensibility, intellect and the sense of inner spontaneity.

We still believe that the film is a leading path to cognition and world understanding. That with a bit of good will, talent and inventiveness it could be possible to search for a way how to shoot about “something more” as well. We don’t consider the author’s attitude or opinion as a luxury but as the responsibility to future audience.

Our Faculty prepares students for professional practise in film and related audiovisual technologies, which work mainly with narration. The study focuses on the artistic and technical readiness of the graduate to produce synthetic films – visual works of art.
